Brighten Up

Ten EASY and refreshing decor ideas using one of a kind finds.

A sure sign warmer weather is coming is the One of A Kind Spring Show and Sale. I’m so thrilled to be presenting at the Show again (you may recall the Winter Woodland table I set for the Christmas Show).

This time, I’ll be offering easy decorating tips on how to refresh our homes. It’s time to shed the winter cozies and breathe some new energy into our spaces. You know me, I love to switch things up, and there’s no better playground than the 450 Canadian artisans featuring their treasures at #OOAKS15.

So please enjoy the tips and trends below, but better yet, come and meet the makers and pick up some of your own sunshine to bring home. (Please come and say hi to me too. I’ll be on the Main Stage on Friday, March 27 at 3pm.)

Ten EASY Ways to Refresh Your Home with One of a Kind Finds

1. Pretty Pastels

Soft pinks, greens and blues are not only visual cues for spring but they are also super hot, on-trend tones we’re seeing this year in everything from fashion to furnishings. Adding accessories in these candy floss hues will immediately add some colour and cool factor to your space.

2. Bright Baskets

Baskets of all shapes, sizes and styles are always a designer favourite. They add texture and visual interest and of course great storage. Place one filled with umbrellas by the front door and welcome those April showers.

3.  Softer Scents

Just like some of us opt for a lighter perfume in warmer months, switch up your candles and try a sunnier scent. Fill a clear glass vase with some sand, pebbles, or beach glass and pop in a fab candle for a stylish and aromatic lift.

4. The Birds and Bees, etc.

Animal-inspired accessories are just so adorable – especially those associated with spring. I know you can’t resist.

 5. Light-Hearted

Remember the sunnier season brings easy, breezy living and hopefully a lot of fun for you. Don’t take your decor too seriously. Add some whimsy with a large side of humour.

6. Refreshed Art

Tuck away that snow scene picture until next winter and introduce lighter, seasonal art. Even leaning a bright piece on your fireplace mantle goes a long way to bring some sunshine in. Popping some fabulous greeting cards in a picture frame is another fast and budget-friendly switch-up to try.

7.  Fresh Linens

Replace those flannel reindeer sheets with crisp linens and your bed will say “ah.” Other places to refresh textiles could be with your table runners, napkins and of course that sexy apron.

8. Pillow Toss (and Throws)

My favourite design switcheroo trick of all time: pillows and throws. Take your beige, brown or grey couch and layer on some colourful, patterned blankets and cushions and you’ll transform your look in a flash.

9. The Inside Garden

So cheap and cheerful. You can buy two pots of mini daffodils or hyacinths for $5, place them in a pretty pot or clear vase with some moss and you will have early blooms that will last all week. Plant the spent bulbs in the garden and you’ll have flowers next year. And why not hang a bird house in your living room (especially if it’s pink)?

10. A Refreshing Drink

After all your spring cleaning and decorating, you certainly deserve to sit down and relax with the libation of your choice.
