BBQ challenge = good eats.

There’s this very cool BBQ place in the village of Keene called Muddy’s Pit BBQ. The roadside eatery pays homage to local pork, beef, chicken and the occasional delicacy of smoked bologna.

For the past few years, Muddy has been organizing a local, amateur competition to spread the love of BBQ cuisine and bring the agricultural community together for some good eats and honest entertainment (including a three-on-three hockey tournament with gigantic straw bales as the boards).

Sunshine, bands, beer and BBQ – summer living at its best.

With a John Deere cooker, a snowplough smoker and teams with names like Ribneck’s and an entrant representing Harley Davidson, the BBQ challenge doesn’t get more authentic-country  than that.

It was hard to decide our vote for the People’s Choice Award. All eight-or-so BBQers made excellent ribs with taste profiles ranging from very spicy, to sweet and sticky, to tangy fruity.

Complimented with some ale from the local Peterborough craft brewery and the pairing is perfect.

What a great way to spend a lazy summer afternoon together.
